Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has injected K2 million (about $5 000) in a beach soccer tournament which will be hosted by Sunbird Livingstonia in Salima.

In an interview at Sunbird Lilongwe on Wednesday after the launch, Beach Soccer Malawi (BSM) general secretary David Sado said FAM has already released the money for the one-day tournament which will commence on September 28.

“FAM has once again demonstrated its commitment to see beach soccer reach greater heights in the country. As BSM, we are appreciative [of FAM’s gesture]. We promise to use the money for the intended purpose.

“The tournament will help the technical people in BSM to select players for the national team,” said Sado.

Two teams from each of the four beach soccer leagues in the country that did well in the Presidential Initiative on Sports will participate in the tournament.

Mchengawamoto and Tourism will represent Salima League. MDF Marine Unit and Yagao will represent the Mangochi League whereas Ana Hardware and Young Stars will represent the Karonga League. Representatives of Chitheche League are yet to be announced.

Winners of the FAM Cup will pocket K300 000 (about $750), runners-up will get K200 000 (about $500), the third-placed team will pocket K120 000 (about $300) whereas the fourth-placed team will receive K75 000 (about $185).
